How to install an eSIM on iPhone
By Aviendra · Updated
Short answer
Open Settings, go to Mobile Service (called Cellular on some versions), choose Add eSIM, and scan the QR code from your confirmation email. Then set the new line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it when you reach your destination.
Before you start
- Your iPhone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. See the compatibility guide linked below.
- Connect to Wi-Fi or mobile data. The phone needs internet to download the eSIM profile.
- Keep your confirmation email open on a second device or print the QR code, because you cannot scan a code that is on the same screen you are scanning with. The email also contains a link and manual details as an alternative.
Install with the QR code
- Open Settings and tap Mobile Service (Cellular). Menu names vary slightly between iOS versions.
- Tap Add eSIM, then Use QR Code.
- Scan the QR code from your Aviendra email or from My eSIMs.
- Follow the prompts to finish. Give the new line a clear label, such as “Travel”.
Install without a second screen
If your plan includes an install link, open it on the iPhone and follow the prompts. If neither works, the email also lists the SM-DP+ address and activation code, which you can enter manually under Add eSIM.
Set it up for travel
- In Mobile Service, choose the travel eSIM as the line for Mobile Data.
- Open the travel line’s settings and turn on Data Roaming, because travel eSIMs connect through partner networks abroad.
- Keep your home line on for calls and texts if you want to stay reachable, or turn it off to avoid roaming charges from your home carrier.
When to install
Activation rules differ by plan. Some plans start counting their validity the first time they connect at the destination, while others may start earlier. Follow the instructions supplied with your plan rather than assuming. Aviendra does not guess when a rule is unconfirmed.
Common questions
- Can I install my eSIM before I fly?
- Often yes, but it depends on the plan. Check the activation guidance that came with your purchase. Installing does not always start the validity period, but on some plans it can.
- Do I need to remove my normal SIM?
- No. An iPhone with eSIM support can keep your physical SIM or home eSIM active alongside the travel eSIM.
- Why can’t I scan the QR code?
- You can’t scan a code shown on the same screen you are scanning with. Open the email on another device, or use the install link or manual details from the email instead.
